English clubs have been springing up all over cities and larger towns for many years. They became very popular when the licensing laws meant that pubs had to close by 11.30pm. Clubs also offer the younger person a chance to go out dancing, as well as drinking after 11.30pm. Clubs also became very popular after the long gap in dance venues after disco’s became a very old fashioned idea and tended to be frequented by the much younger crowd.
There are many clubs in cities, each with a different theme and catering to a wide variety of tastes of the individual club goer. All clubs offer something different within a theme, they tend to all have load music and do not serve food, though many may be open in the daytime to catch more areas of the market. Some clubs are actually full restaurants and bars and it is the upper or lower floors that are the club areas, this allows them to maximise their income.
City pubs are a result of the older public houses that started up many years ago. Many were once hotels or coaching houses, catering to the travellers and pilgrims of the early days. They are large social centres and offer a huge variety of services and facilities. There are a lot of public houses, hotels and old hostelries that keep their older features as a way of linking to the past and increasing the aesthetic values of the pub. There are unfortunately a number of pubs, including the city pubs that are under threat of closure from lack of support. These include many public houses that are centuries’ old; some that have closed in the last few years were established in 1685, 1720 and 1834. There are many pubs that are facing closure that deserve to be protected and supported by the local population.
