Bears can't run downhill
Explaining 201 common claims and popular misconceptions, this work appeals to a quiz fanatic, a trivia buff, a show-off down the pub - or a wife or girlfriend who wants a way to get the upper hand and put a stop to this nonsense once and for all!
Brain men
Brain Men will provide the answers to those questions that are most frequently asked in pub quizzes, while casting a humourous eye over the origins and practices of quizzes. Deep within the human psyche lurks the primal urge to compete. It can take many forms: sport, nuclear war, the pub quiz. Sport is universal, nuclear war threatens us all, but only Britain has a thriving quiz culture all of its own. Why do people watch quizzes on TV and why do so many go to a pub quiz each week, to compete for a cash prize smaller than the amount they will spend on beer? This book delves into the dark heart of British quiz culture - its origins, its practices, its background - and its unfortunate knitwear.
Bears can't run downhill
Explaining 201 common claims and popular misconceptions, this work appeals to a quiz fanatic, a trivia buff, a show-off down the pub - or a wife or girlfriend who wants a way to get the upper hand and put a stop to this nonsense once and for all! Ever wondered whether Bob Holness really did play the saxophone solo on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street ? Or whether a swan can break a man's arm? Or whether computer games are illegal in Greece?! If so, you've probably spent far too much time down the pub, conversing with a mate on the wrong end of four pints of lager. We've all heard them: wild claims, spurious rumours and barely believable 'pub facts'. Don't pretend you've never wondered whether a crocodile really can run faster than a racehorse. Or pondered the possibility that there is only one cash machine in the whole of Albania? If this sort of thing keeps you awake at night, then this book has come to the rescue. Bears Can't Run Downhill... debunks and explains 201 common claims and popular misconceptions. It's the ideal stocking-filler for the quiz fanatic, the trivia buff, the show-off down the pub - or the wife or girlfriend who wants a way to a) get the upper hand and b) put a stop to this nonsense once and for all. So here is the definitive tome - all you will never need (until the sequel at least) - of well-known 'facts' both true and apocryphal.

Country loving
Ruby and Oliver move to the country to enjoy the slower pace of life. Ruby intends to work on her novel but finds it's not only rural life which is seductive - so is Hamish, the handsome local journalist. Ruby Grant has just moved to the country. Her husband, Oliver, is sceptical about anything rural, but he seizes the opportunity to leave Ruby's two grown-up yet inexplicably dependent children behind in the city. Life slows down alarmingly from the moment they set foot in Troy Cottage, but at least Ruby can finally start writing her novel in peace. Until her daughter, Poppy, turns up with boyfriend and dog in tow, announces she's pregnant and moves into Ruby's office. Then Josh needs somewhere to do his washing, and her father wants to stay for Christmas...Despite this, Ruby finds village life surprisingly seductive. The Christmas pantomime, the weekly pub quiz, the summer fete...she just can't say no. And especially not to Hamish, the handsome journalist who seems anxious to accompany her on investigations for the parish magazine. There's surely no harm in a little crush - but can Ruby avoid the hazards of country loving?
