The return of the Afternoon Tea

With TV shows like BBC’s The Great British Bake Off making their mark on people up and down the country, it’s no surprise that all things quaint and vintage, like Afternoon Tea, are making a comeback.

If you haven’t watched Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry offer their harsh, but fair, criticism, then you’ve really been missing out – baking is back with a vengeance!

Those of you who are a little bit nifty in the pub kitchen are bound to find that the Afternoon Tea is fairly easy for you to achieve and, the best thing is, you’ll still manage to impress your friends with your concoctions.

Rather than doing a traditional pub fare, why not make a quintessentially British Afternoon Tea instead? If the weather’s nice, you could even go one step further and serve it in the beer garden – make the most of the sunshine while it lasts!

There are different lengths you could go to with the effort you’re willing to put into your Afternoon Tea. If you’re feeling very brave (and you’ve got plenty of time on your hands), you might want to make your own granary bread for your sandwiches.

If not, getting a loaf of Hovis bread will do the trick, but of course, it’s not quite as authentic!

When it comes to the fillings, it’s entirely up to you – you could go for the traditional cucumber, ham and cheese and coronation chicken affair. Or, of course, you could get a bit more adventurous – think brie, bacon and cranberry and maybe even make your own chutneys.

You’ll need to prepare some other savoury treats – perhaps homemade sausage rolls and mini quiches might tickle your fancy and they’re fairly easy to do. Plus, you could freeze stuff if you make it well in advance.

Last, but by no means least, you’ll have to plan your sweet stuff. Think fresh fruit tartlets, cute little biscuits and mini cakes. This is where you can really get your creative juices flowing and it’ll be well worth it if you do.
